Position Summary
The Assistant Team Coach will help to oversee all practices, swim meets and related activities and provide swim team members with individual instruction tailored to the needs and skill ability of each individual as directed by the Head Coach.
Qualifications, Certifications and Experience:
Pre-Employment Certifications
(Responsibility of the EMPLOYEE to earn and maintain; Cost of certification and time spent on the certification are not covered by the employer*)
- USA Swimming Coach Certification - Level 1 (Level 2 required by 1 year anniversary of hire date)
- *Johnston Blaze Swim Club will cover the cost of required USA Swimming certifications and background check but will not pay coaches for time spent earning or maintaining these certifications
- Current Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid certification (American Red Cross preferred, Others as approved by CE Aquatic Coordinator – must convert to ARC within 1 year of hire date)
Certifications Obtainable upon Employment
(Complete within 2 weeks of hire and prior to first scheduled shift; Cost of certification and time spent on the certification are covered by the employer)
- Trainings required by the Johnston Community School District
- Trainings required by Community Education
Experience
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent
- Competitive swimming background preferred
- Knowledge of competitive swimming structure and club operations preferred
- Knowledge of instructing and coaching developmental and competitive swimming preferred
Performance Criteria
Professional
- Ensure safety of all swimmers
- Communicate with participants, parents, coaches and pool staff
- Organize and run swim team practices and meets at the direction of the Head Coach
- Attend all assigned meetings
- Assist with developing team goals and strategies for a successful swim season
- Assist swimmers in developing personal swim goals and operation of club
- Attend all practices and meets as scheduled
- Strive to find methods and processes to improve the club
- Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position
- Displays professional behavior when representing the Blaze Swim Club, Community Education and the Johnston Community School District (practices, meets, meetings, etc.)
- Engage in professional development as available.

- Work location will be assigned as needed.
- Work days/hours may vary depending upon program needs.
- Primary location is Johnston Community School District facilities and program-specific.
- Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or higher-level leadership.
- Performance evaluation conducted by direct supervisor.
